Saturdays Surf

Ok i'm on my way to NZ for a week, to see family - i'm gonna be in the country, there is no internet so bear with me. But before i go i wanted to leave you with this; i LOVE saturdays surf shop. It's my favorite place for coffee, sitting out back is the best downtown summer spot i know. The boys are kinda cute and hanging with surfboards and wetsuits makes me feel a little like being back home. I met Ashlee there this week - her long blonde hair and a-dorable freckles seemed to fit right in - she makes me wanna be at the beach. So happy Saturday everyone - see ya soon x

Shorts?

It's so f'n hot in NYC at the moment i seriously don't know what to wear - actually that's a lie - i just wear the same thing everyday; a pair of black Prada boxer shorts and a t-shirt, whichever one is clean, i only have 4 that i like and they are dictating a constant washing cycle. But if i had legs like these i would wear shorts like this - made by Acne - they may not have had the LES in mind when they designed them but i swear they seem perfect for a busy day of errands right now. So here's to short shorts and long legs and i guess even never ending hot days and humid nights - cos i'll be the first to complain when i have to wear wooly stockings under my jeans just to get me to the coffee shop.

Le Spot

I like prints, in theory. No i mean i like looking at them, i just never end up buying them. They seem too complicated for me, i don't have the imagination to make them work. Except spots (and stripes) - are these considered prints? Anyway i love them, i have two spotted shirts and they make me happy. So imagine my joy when i saw Julie and her whole little spotted outfit. Ok i'm now thinking there's nothing better than a matching print, top and bottom - how easy is that in the morning, and don't ya think it looks kinda chic?.

Ad Love

One of my favorite things about opening up a new season mag are the ads, all those glossy, big, fancy, new fashion ads. I've always loved them, and i always will. I'm all about the internet (obviously) i love the iPad - blah blah - but really i hope that for my time i can always rip out a perfect picture from Prada or Marant and stick it on my wall. So here's a little collage of a few of my current favs that've got me all giddy about buying a cosy coat when it's 97 degrees outside. I don't care what people say this stuff still works on me. I mean Emma Belfour at 39 for Celine, beautiful, Tati making Valentino feel so fresh, Kate's as cool as ever smoking at Marnat, the ladies at Vuitton, and Bruce W captures the most charming mum and child for Ferragamo - of course. It's just all so, um, nice to look at.

Bye Bye Ballet Slipper?

Ok so i wear my black Repettos pretty much every day, they are the only thing i can think of that i purchase over and over as soon as they wear out. But i've been thinking - it might be time to replace them (for a bit) with a lovely long loafer. The first designer thing i ever got as a teenager was a pair of Gucci loafers on a family trip to Rome, man i loved those things, if i still had them i'd wear them today. But maybe now, even more, i want the elongated penny version that Chloé have done. Pretty great with everything i own. Or just a soft vintage pair like Miranda wears up top, in perfect dirty white for summer, hmmm also kinda nice. That's it, i'm convinced, it's all about the loafer.

The Big (little) Reveal

Im into wearing baggy stuff, but as i get a bit older i'm realising that actually a little body con can be a good thing. And seeing Molly in this number on the weekend reminded me of the fact - it's kinda cool and just a little, more, well feminine, to have a slim bodysuit or tight tank under something bigger, something comfy and loose. It's nice to reveal what ya got - just not all at once, no?

'I really don't think like other stylists. It's not about the fashion' 'it's about a dream girl' says Venetia Scott. When i read this it brought home why i love her work so much. Her honest reportage style of photography, her college-kid mix, her love of 70's vintage with new stuff, her influences like Larry Clark's Teenage Lust and photographs by Joseph Szabo. 'I always want you to see the girl, and then have the clothes tell you something more about her' - Yeah same here, that's just what i want to see - so thanks miss Scott for such inspiration and here's a couple of collages to share a few of my favorite pics from her world.

Paris

There's just something about her - something sorta wild, carefree, maybe it's the hair, maybe that pattern mix and see through shirt - whatever, when i saw Paris crossing the street i knew i had to take her picture. And when we got chatting i realised where her independent spirit likely comes from. Her parents are both artists - her Dad and Uncle have created the work Big Bambú currently on the rooftop of The Met. I was just there last weekend marveling at this piece, if you're in NY, really go and see it, totally amazing. So yeah good breeding - but that doesn't necessarily guarantee anything, so Paris bravo for being one of a kind at an age when it's much easier to blend in.

Thanks MK & Ashley

Ok, so for some time now i've been quite obsessed with getting a great pair of vintage blue jeans, you know old 501's or 555's or something. I've tried on plenty, trust me, plenty. I've pounced on girls on the street looking A-Mazing in theirs to get some info, i've searched high and low. And they all do two rather, well, unflattering things on my body. 1. They make me look male in the crotch area, yeah, does there need to be another issue? not really but there is 2. they make my bum look a mile long. So when i saw these beauties hanging in Barneys the other day you can imagine my delight - cos yeah, they look kinda vintage right? Who knew the Olsens have been busy re-creating the perfect pair of simple, slightly washed out, vintage inspired (i'm sure) blue jeans. I know how plain they look, but that's their beauty - they flatter my body, they're super comfy, they literally go with everything i own - i mean apart from their hefty price tag - yes alas they fall under The Row - they are perfect. And to be honest it's such a sweet relief that my vintage denim hunt is over, i've nearly forgotten the price. So when my husband persuaded me to spend a day at the pub watching the Soccer on Sunday i persuaded him to snap me in my new jeans on the way there - oh and no i didn't ask him to chop my head off, but hey, that's what we got. Ok so in a flurry of denim excitement i started flicking through my mags to see what else i might love as much as these, and um hello, i found this Céline all in one - ok it's perfect - how much could it possibly be? I need it. Does it ever end? But back to my latest splurge - i love them, actually i'm off to put them on right now :)

Two beautiful girls, two beautiful bellies, four hands in pockets and a pair of great great cropped tops. I'm really into this silhouette in this heat - ok i wear mine a little longer - i'm a little older :0 but the idea is the same and i think it's cool (literally) and fun and totally easy.

Reece Hudson

You don't want a big designer 'it' bag but you want something beautiful, something special, something you're not gonna see swinging on an arm at every street corner. You want something well made in a leather so soft you could rest your head on it in transit. You've saved up and you're happy to spend a bit but maybe not a months rent (ok, or two). Do ya know what i mean, do you share my handbag dilemma? Well last week i popped over to meet Reece and Max and i think their collection of bags and clutches, Reece Hudson, might just fill the gap. So i snapped Reece with my favorite from their collection, the little duffle with it's geometric shapes and beautiful texture. And below; a collection of images that'v inspired her, yup, now i know why these bags have such a cool and casual, sorta bohemian feel.

Rock On

I actually took this picture for my husband, you see, in his youth he was kinda obsessed with Metallica, and i know somewhere in New Zealand in a storage unit there's a box full old tour t shirts just like this one - ok maybe not '88, he was only 10, but from the 90's for sure. I've never been cool enough to rack up lists of concerts, plaster my bedroom wall with used tickets (is that what you do?), have great pictures of me sitting on some boy's shoulder - and hmmm i kinda regret it. So next time i go and see The Dead Weather, yeah i went, pretty rock 'n' roll, i'm buying the tee cos in years to come i bet i'll feel totally cool wearing it. It's not to late to start right?

I Can't Handle The Heat

So it seems you can make baggy tees and short shorts look pretty great, and here i've been battling the heat in a much less lovely version.

Backpacks & Backwards Caps

Ok so you don't have to wear your hat backwards but i'm kinda loving cool girls running around town with backpacks and caps. And when i open Italian Vogue to see the best 'camping' editorial ever - it's done, my fondness for all things utilitarian is official. Don't ya think it's kinda cool?

Girl Crush

This weekend i got to meet Dani and photograph her for a friends mag. It was goooood - and she made my job totally fun and easy - yeah sure partly cos she looks like a young Christy T, not bad - but more so cos she makes whatever she puts on seem so easy and cool, she's totally relaxed and low key - just how i would like to be :) So i'm pretty excited to share some of my favorite pics from the day and in the meantime here's Dani in her Saturday ensemble, bag stuffed with blankets and books for a long afternoon in Central Park. Hmmm kinda nice.

Wild Things

When i first met Miranda we were at a dinner party, she was seated next to me, she came running in a little late and sat down, i reached out my hand to introduce myself, she said hi and jumped on me with a big hug. That's her, she's cool, she's totally at ease with life, she says what she thinks, she does her own thing, she get's excited and shows it. And when it comes to dressing, of course she just wears what she feels like... and yeah, looks all the cooler for it. She has no rules, no predetermined idea of how she wants people to see her, if she likes it, she just puts it on. And for this i love her. So i made this collage for her (and you :) of a few other free spirits just doing their thing and totally inspiring me to do the same.

A Total Cinch

I once read a quote from Carine Roitfeld somewhere saying how good it is for a woman to show her waist - that it's feminine, flattering, sexy - all the things she knows something about :). I never do, it's not my favorite feature - and so i put this sound advice to the back of my mind. Until on a recent shopping excursion when i slipped on a short black Balenciaga Edition dress with some kinda magical belt on the inside - and well, it nipped me in at just the right spot. Now i get it - the power of a cinched waist, which somehow makes everything else look a little better. Not all the time, i'm not a total convert - but when the proportions are just right it can be a good thing indeed. This little Stella M number reminded me in silhouette of that lovely black Balenciaga, which alas, i left hanging on the rack in the changing room (the price was not quite as perfect as the fit). So i sit here in a baggy denim shirt and turn my attention to a collage of cinched waists instead. And hmmm, don't they look pretty.

Little Charmer

Yeah you know i love turbans, um, and especially when miss Prada is making them. So seeing McCallan in hers - i was a bit smitten. And the only thing here i love more than the turban itself is how she wears it so casually. I'm inspired to put mine on during the day, wear it with black cotton shorts, a soft old tee and maybe even my vans. Thanks McCallan, you're a charmer :)
